their use value. For example, polystyrene has good transparency and
processability, but it needs rubber to increase its toughness in order
to have higher impact strength. This additive, which gives plastics
better toughness, is called toughening agent, also known as impact
modifier. At present, the main purpose of developing toughening agent is
to improve the brittleness of rigid polyvinyl chloride. The increasing
use of hard polyvinyl chloride in the world is closely related to the
increasing development of toughening agents and processing modifiers.
Toughening agent is a kind of additive which can reduce the brittleness
of composite materials and improve the impact resistance of composite
materials. It can be divided into two categories: active toughening
agent and inactive elastic toughening agent. Active toughening agent
refers to the active group on its molecular chain which can react with
matrix resin. It can form network structure and increase part of
flexible chain, thus improving the impact resistance of composites.
Non-active tougheners are a kind of tougheners which are well compatible
with matrix resins but do not participate in chemical reactions.
According to the different chemical structures of the materials to be
toughened, there are corresponding types of toughening agents. The
principle of plastics toughening agents is different. They can
effectively increase the toughness of various plastics through special
chemical and physical effects under the condition of a small amount of
use.
